30% of women would describe their birth experience as traumatic. Birth trauma occurs when pregnancy, birth or early postnatal days have been a frightening, traumatic and negative experience. The symptoms of trauma can vary but can include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, guilt, anger, sadness, depression, difficulty bonding with baby, difficulty relating to partner, and in many cases these symptoms can ripple out into every aspect of life, and even cause future family plans to be placed firmly on hold.
This does not mean you are broken.
Your physical symptoms are simply your body protecting you, keeping you safe from perceived danger. Imagine you are scared of snakes; if one is in front of you, it may be a reasonable fear that the snake may harm you. Now imagine a picture of a snake comes up on the television; you may still experience a rapid heart rate, sweating, feeling sick and tense. This is because your body does not know the difference between what is real, and what is perceived. Your body will still react in the same way. When something recalls the traumatic event to you (it may even be a smell or the sound of someones voice), your body is on alert to protect you from what you experienced.
This is where the 3 Step Rewind technique comes in.
The Birth Awareness 3 Step Rewind technique is a very effective and well tested technique, that neutralises the disturbing feelings associated with the trauma you have experienced. The memory of what happened still exists, but it no longer provokes anxiety, panic, guilt, anger or sadness allowing you to move forward with your life. The sessions can help restore feelings of calm and confidence to someone who has been plagued with the anxiety associated with trauma.
The 3 steps take place over 3 sessions, lasting approximately 45 minues - 1.5 hours each and over approximately 10-14 days (these sessions are only provided on a 1:1 basis so are flexible to your needs). It is equally effective 3 months after the event as it is 3 years or even longer after.
Session one can provide a safe space for an individual to tell their story and is the first step to understanding what happened and what course of further action to take, if appropriate. This can also be done content free, so I do not even have to know what has happened in the past. If you can identify strong feelings towards the event / experience, then this can be worked through using this technique. We will also carry out a deep relaxation, an mp3 of which will also be yours to keep and use when you feel the need.
In session 2 we will carry out the "rewind" part of the process. This involves recalling the event in a specific way, whilst feeling safe and secure.
Session 3 is about imagining coping in the future, reframing the event which will enable you to respond differently.
